FRESNO CITY COLLEGE DUAL ENROLLMENT COURSES
Eligible SJM students in the classes of 2022 and 2023 have the opportunity to enroll in two college courses offered by Fresno City College. FCC professors will teach the courses. Each course is one semester long, and successful completion earns 3-4 transferable college units. In addition, for each semester course students will earn 10 credits (a full year’s worth) from SJM.
Prerequisites:
To be eligible for dual enrollment, you must:
▪ be a current sophomore or junior
▪ have a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA
▪ have an “A” in the most recent college-prep level English class, or a “B” or better in
Honors/A.P. English: the prerequisite grade must be maintained through the second semester (2021).
▪ be approved by Fresno City College administration
Option 1:
Fall 2021 – English 1A: Reading and Comprehension 4 units, 4 lecture hours
Reading, analyzing, and writing college-level prose, with emphasis on the expository; studying the writing process; exploring different writing strategies; summarizing, editing, and critiquing; conducting research (gathering, organizing, evaluating, integrating and documenting information). (C-ID ENGL 100) (A, CSU-GE, UC, I)
This course satisfies an A-G English “B” requirement.
Spring 2022 - Communication 1: Introduction to Public Speaking 3 units, 3 lecture hours (Formerly Speech 1):
Theories and techniques of public speaking from the perspective of the speaker and the audience. Emphasis on research, logical organization, composition and effective delivery of informative and persuasive speeches. Practice in clearly stating and developing ideas. This course satisfies an A-G Elective “G” requirement.
Option 2:
Fall 2021 – English 3: Critical Reading & Writing
3 units, 3 lecture hours
Prerequisite: English 1A or 3 or higher on AP English Language and Composition Test
Developing critical thinking skills in reading and writing beyond English 1A. Reasoning for analysis and argument writing based mainly on non-fiction readings. (C-ID ENGL 105) (A, CSU-GE, UC, I)
This course satisfies an A-G English “B” requirement.
Spring 2022 - Sociology 1A: Introduction to Sociology 3 units, 3 lecture hours
Basic concepts, theoretical approaches, and methods of sociology. Analysis and explanation of social structure, culture, socialization, the self and social interaction, group dynamics, institutions, deviance, stratification, social change, social problems, and global dynamics.
